Frequently Asked Questions

 

 1) Do you offer ongoing financial help? 

We offer temporary transitional assistance to aid people whose life or financial circumstances have changed and consequently are facing unexpected challenges. The transitional support is typically for a period of 3 months. We also provide referrals to additional community resources, including financial assistance, and government benefits programs. 

2) What areas do you cover? 

Please see our What We Do page for a listing of the programs and supports we offer.

3) Do you provide counselling services? 

No, we do not offer counselling services. However, we can refer you to the appropriate resources. We have a list of links to resources in the community.

4) What type of employment services do you offer?

We do not formally offer employment services but can direct you to resources within the community. 

5) Who qualifies for assistance? 

Typically, potential clients are interviewed by our social worker and assessed according to need. 

6) How do I get in touch if I need assistance? 

The best way to reach us is by phone 778-405-3300 or email reachout@jfsvi.ca and we will get in touch with you as soon as possible. If this a life-threatening crisis or emergency, please call 911. 

7) Can anyone use the services of JFSVI? 

Although we are a faith-based organization, we do not discriminate based on age, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, or disabilities, however, we do operate within the context of Jewish values. Our clients include people of all ages and backgrounds including young families with children, adults, seniors, immigrants, and more. 

8) What types of donations do you accept? 

As a non-profit organization, we highly encourage our donors and businesses to give monetary donations to support individuals and families on our client list, or to fund our various programs.

We also encourage grocery gift card donations throughout the year, from any of our partners: Thrifty Foods, COBS Bread, Fairway Markets, The Bikery, and for kosher foods, Fernwood General Store.

 

9) Do you accept old computers, furniture, or clothing? 

We don’t have the capacity to take used furniture, household goods, or electronics at this time.  You are welcome to donate those items to a community thrift shop such as the Salvation Army Thrift Store or any local Habitat for Humanity ReStore location.
